PRESS RELEASE
(August 12, 1977)
Premier Richard Hatfield said today that the 18th Annual Premiers Conference which opens next week in St. Andrews will present a significant opportunity for the ten provincial leaders to discuss the several challenges facing Canada today.
Over the course of the two-day conference, the Premiers’ discussions will cover a number of subjects under the two agenda headings The Economy and The Country.
Under The Economy, Premiers are expected to deal with several issues including unemployment, plans for the post-controls period, transportation and energy matters.
Discussion on The Country will include consideration of provisions for minority language education in the two official languages, federal-provincial constitution trends, and procedures for constitutional reform.
The Premiers are expected as well to hold a special private session to deal with items of particular concern to the ten provincial leaders.
The Conference, which opens Thursday, August l8th at the Algonquin Hotel in the historic town of St. Andrews will conclude following completion of the formal sessions Friday with a visit to Campobello Island where delegates will tour Roosevelt-Campobello International Park under the guidance of Franklin Roosevelt Jr. and Senator Edmund Muskie of Maine, Chairman of the Roosevelt-Campobello International Park Commission. This will be followed by a reception and dinner given by New Brunswick Lieutenant- Governor Hedard J. Robichaud.
