CANADIAN ITEMS.

Since the defeat of Confederation in the Lower Provinces, everybody is asking everybody else: What next? without the least prospect of a satisfactory answer being received, for sometime at least. It is evident that nothing more can be done about the matter for some years at least, and the attention of the people of Canada must now be turned anew to the difficulties of governing their own country. It appears that the government are not willing to look at matters in this light, will try to bring Imperial influence to bear on the Lower Provinces, and are about sending four of their own number, namely: Messrs. Galt, Cartier, John A. MacDonald, and Wm. McDougall, to England for the purpose of trying what can be done towards the success of their pet project. It is not very likely that anything can be done by the gentlemen named, but there can be no particular harm in giving them a pleasure trip at the public expense: their little bill can easily be added to the thirty thousand dollars spent in bringing Confederation into existence.
