DENYING HIS IDENTITY.
(From the Ottawa Citizen, Ministerial)
Our contemporary, the Montreal Gazette, resorts to a miserable quibble to evade its responsibility for the allegation that Mr. Galt had proceeded to London entrusted with a special mission to watch over the interests of the Protestants of Lower Canada. As will be seen by extracts which we give in another column, the Gazette in its issue of the 24th of October, originated the statement that Mr. Galt had been entrusted with such a mission, while in its issue of the 21st ult., it takes the ground that nobody had said so, except a Rouge paper in Montreal. This inconsistency the Gazette seeks to reconcile by urging the plea that it never said that Mr. Galt had received an appointment from the Protestants of Lower Canada. There may be a material difference as to whether Mr. Galt was selected by the Government or appointed by the Protestants of Lower Canada; but we feel certain that point has never been considered. The Gazette, speaking evidently under official inspiration, distinctly stated Mr. Galt had received such appointment, and it assures our Protestant friends that the man who resigned the honours and emoluments of office on this question (the Education question) will not as a delegate be found wanting to his trust as their representative. The language of the Gazette was precise, and there can be no doubt but that, through it, the impression was intended to go abroad that the Protestant interests of the Lower Canada minority had been placed in the guardianship of Mr. Galt. It was thus expected that the fears of the Lower Canada minority would be hushed, and that no steps would be taken to disturb the deliberations of the delegates. Not until the publication of the modified resolutions in the Canadian News did the Gazette seek to throw discredit upon its former statements. It now aims to evade the responsibility for lending its columns to mislead the Protestants of Lower Canada by raising a cloud of dust
