Saturday 2 February
In afternoon received the Delegates’ proposal on the Senate and circulated it amongst the Cabinet.
A very bad influenza cold began.
In the evening we had a large dinner party — some of the Delegates, the Cranbornes, Lord and Lady Grey, the Cairns, Gathorne Hardy, etc. Afterwards to the astonishment of our guests Gladstone walked in. Hardy looked as if he would have fallen down in a fit.
Gladstone looked much aged and very ill.
