[1] There are certainly several problems in relying on an auction list to reconstruct John A. Macdonald’s intellectual and political thought. Notably, the auction occurred nearly 10 years after his passing, and a newspaper article from the period notes that “many of the books were presented to Sir John and these were withheld from the sale.” See “Sir J.A. Macdonald’s Library,” The Evening [Ottawa] Citizen (May 29, 1900). While the list may not be exhaustive or representative for various other reasons, one should also recall that having books in one’s library shelf does not equate in having read them. One must find clear evidence that such works were in fact read and used.

For scholars that have nevertheless made these attempts, see Frederick Vaughan, The Canadian Federalist Experiment: From Defiant Monarchy to Reluctant Republic (McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2003), and E.A. Heaman, Civilization: From Enlightenment Philosophy to Canadian History (McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2022). [C.D.]
