Notably, the auction occurred nearly 10 years after his passing, and a newspaper article from the period notes that “many of the books were presented to Sir John and these were withheld from the sale.” See “Sir J.A. While the list may not be exhaustive or representative for various other reasons, one should also recall that having books in one’s library shelf does not equate in having read them. One must find clear evidence that such works were in fact read and used.
