Tuesday 18 December (Highclere)

Went up to town by first train.

Received Howe, Annand, and Macdonald, anti-confederates at the C.O.

Howe managed his case with great skill and temper and impressed me much. He went away I think in good humour. If only the question is referred to the people of N. Scotia, not the Parliament, he is satisfied. It is an awkward question.
