MR. DORION ON CONFEDERATION.
The Hon. Mr. Dorion writes a letter to his constituents at Hochelaga, in which he ably reviews the project of confederation in all its bearings.—He condemns the project because it will increase the public debt of the country, and put new and heavy taxes on the people. It is also unjust to carry it through without the sanction of the people’s vote; and he considers the proceedings both tyrannical and uncalled for by the circumstances which brought the Coalition Government into existence. Mr. Dorion thinks a reciprocity treaty of commerce would secure all the advantages we can get by a union with the Maratime Provinces, without giving us the complications and expense of numerous governments that will always be conflicting in authority, and leave each Province at the mercy of the Central Government. Mr. Dorion’s arguments embrace the whole question, and though moderate in tone, are a very clear and powerful exposition of the entire subject of confederation. We shall publish the letter entire in our next number, and leave our readers to judge of its merits and the weight of its arguments, for themselves.
