For Thursday, March 28, 1968

I give Notice of Motion
that on Thursday next, I shall
Move, Seconded by the ahonourable
L.G. Desbrisay:

WHEREAS in Canada and in
New Brunswick there are two
principal languages, English and
French, and

WHEREAS Canadians are
dedicated to the principle that
all citizens should feel at home
in every part of Canada, and

WHEREAS this principle
requires of Canadians a new
policy of linguistic equality
that will give fuller expression
to the values of both English
and French linguistic tradi-
tions, thus strenthening the
unity of Canada, and

WHEREAS the national and
provincial governments are united
in support of this policy, as
evidences by the ‘consensus on
language rights’ achieved at
the February, 1968 Federal-
Provincial Conference, and

Je donne avis que jeudi
prochain, je ferai la proposi-
tion suivante, secondé par
l’hon. L.G. Desbrisay:

ATTENDU QU’AU Canada et
qu’au Nouveau-Brunswick il y a
deux principales langues,
l’anglais et le français, et

ATTENDU QUE les canadiens
on consacré le principe que
tout citoyen devra se sentir
chez-lui partout au Canada, et

ATTENDU QUE pour fortifier
l’unité nationale, ce principe
demande des canadiens une
nouvelle politique d’égalité
linguistique donnant pleine
mesure aux valeurs linguistiques
traditionnelles des anglophones
et des francophones, et

ATTENDU QUE les gouvernements
national et provincaux appuient
unanimement cette politique tel
qu’en démotre le ‘consensus sur
les droits linguistiques’ obtenu
à la conférence fédérale –
provinciale de février 1968, et

WHEREAS the long association
of English-speaking and French-
speaking citizens in this Province
affords New Brunswick a unique
opportunity to serve the cause of
national unity,

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED
THAT THIS ASSEMBLY: –

1. declares the principle
that the English and French
languages are the official
languages of New Brunswick;

2. re-affirms that the
English and French languages
have full rights of usage in
all the proceedings of this
Assembly;

3. agrees that the Government
take steps with appropriate
speed to provide for the
printing in both English
and French of all the records
and proceedings of this
Assembly, and of the
provincial statutes and
other public documents;

ATTENDU QUE la langue
association des citoyens
francophones et anglophones
de la province offre au
Nouveau-Brunswick l’ocassion
unique de contribuer à l’unité
nationale;

IL EST DONC RESSOLU QUE
CETTE ASSEMBLEE:

1. énonce le principe que
les langues francophone et
anglophone sont les langues
officielles du Nouveau-
Brunswick;

2. réaffirme que les
langues anglaise et
francaise ont plein droit
d’usage dans toutes les
procédures de cette
assemblée;

3. exhorte le gouvernement
à prendre les mesures
nécessaires, dans les
meilleurs délais pour
imprimer en anglais et en
français les archives et
les procès verbaux de cette
assemblée ainsi que les
status provincaux et autres
documents publics;

4. agrees that the Government
introduce with appropriate
speed such legislation as may
be required to establish in New
Brunswick the language regime
appropriate to an officially
bilingual Province, and is
particular to introduce such
measures in relation to Education,
the public service, and the
judicial system; and

5. recommends that the Government
cooperate and consult with other
provincial governments and with
the Government of Canada to
coordinate linguistic programs.

4. exhorts le gouvernement
à introduire dans les meilleurs
délais la législation nécessaire
à l’établissement au Nouveau-
Brunswick d’un régime
linguistique approprié à une
province officielle bilingue
et à introduire tout
particulièrement de telles
mesures dan les domaines de
l’éducation, de la fonction
publique et du système
judicaire; et

5. recommande au gouvernement
de consulter et collaborer
avec les autres compétences
provinciales et fédérales pour
coordonner les programmes
linguistiques.
