THE LOCAL CONSTITUTIONS.

—The discussion on the Local Constitutions was resumed on Friday evening in the Assembly with less spirit than any debate of the Session. The House was very thin, there being barely a quorum present, and if we except one or two of the leading men on each side, very little interest was exhibited by the members in the important subject under consideration. The general disposition, our advices inform us, seemed to be to allow the Government to pass through their measure as quickly as possible, but they singularly enough declined to proceed, and moved an adjournment of the debate, which was carried. The indifference exhibited in regard to this subject by some of the members, especially the ministerial supporters, is attempted to be excused by the plea that the local constitutions may subsequently be altered if unsatisfactory. But in the meantime it will be upon the very meagre skeleton of a scheme introduced by the Government, that the Imperial Parliament, will have to act, and the importance of making this as complete as may be, deficient as it now is in so many respects, must be obvious to every one.
