THE PRICE OF TREACHERY
The last official Gazette contains the announcement that James Dickson, M. P. P. for Huron and Bruce, has been appointed Registrar for the County of Huron. Of all the acts of political treachery that have ever darkened the pages of Canadian history, none surpasses this case. This man, above all others, it was supposed, would stand fast to his colors—he was the man, who, it was expected, would be the last in the world to desert the Western Members in their fight against Grand Trunk encroachments, sectarian education, and corrupt jobbery by John A., Cartier & Co., but during the last session of Parliament he was found voting for the most unscrupulous and corrupt acts brought in by the Coalition, and his appointment to the Registrarship of the County of Huron is the price paid him by John A. McDonald for his pure treachery.
We notice that several other appointments of importance have been made. We [men-] tioned in our last that a batch of assistant judges were to be appointed; the first of these has been gazetted—J. E. Pringle, of Cornwall, has been appointed assistant-judge of Stormont and Glengarry. It is stated that these appointments are nothing more or less than acts of corruption of the worst kind, and that it is a plan of the Tory portion of the Ministry to make room for a lot of worn out and needy politicians of their own stripe of politics. It is stated that there are no class of men in the Province who earn their money easier and with less work than the County Judges, and that either the assistant judges or the old ones, will have nothing to do.
Mr. J. H. Johnston, of Sarnia, has been appointed to the lucrative post of Registrar for the County of Lambton; the Hon. Sidney Smith has been appointed Inspector of the Registry Offices of Upper Canada (another sinecure position for poor broken-down Sidney); S. Brough of Toronto is to be Judge for Huron and Bruce; J. Bethune of Cornwall, Clerk of the Peace and County Attorney for Stormont and Glengarry.
